the little things
I love this time of year.
Did you wear that sweater just for me? I always said that color brought out the shine in your eyes.
Like a red scarf or the first touch of skin, precious moments that make me pause and hold my breath.
If you knew then what you know now...no, nevermind, I won't ask;
Let's not spoil the evening.
Reminiscing on the porch steps,
I can remember it like it was yesterday...although a lifetime ago it was.
Eggs cracking in the morning, I broke the yolk like I broke your heart;
Make sure you eat up every bite even though it hurts.
Hopelessly lost and yet found, peeking through the window as the eerie music plays;
Waving to those who love me and then closing the curtains tight.
Don't look!
I can still see your face so clearly,
Looking back to me for help and instead I left you stranded.
They'll say it doesn't matter, that I did my best, I tried;
I wish I had done more for you, little one.
So much more. Happy Halloween.
