Being a teen and being a girl are two things that can be very stressful. Being an emotionally degenerate teen girl is an anguishing fact that Wylan Olson will always be forced to settle with, but she's making it, barely.
Just imagine if you were the real life embodiment of 'tears of joy' or 'laugh to keep from crying'. Trust and believe it gets old, quick, but when the line between conventional and unconventional reactions to emotional situations is always askew, there's really nothing more you can do than learn to live with it.
But when Wylan meets Kwame Okari, the waters of stubborn and competitive natures start to rise. Kwame knows how to push all the right buttons, and he is a boy on a very clear mission. His objective: be first. And there's only one person standing in his way. Neither teen is willing to give.
