chapter 14 : remembering summer

"what's the last thing you remember" her uncle ask

"I'm playing with a boy, same age as me, he taught me how to play the guitar. we also made promises but."

sai holds her head clutching from the pain "don't push yourself sweetheart." her parents & auntie said. sai shakes her head

"I'm okay but why is that I can't remember his face? I can't remember his voice & what we were talking about. I can only remember his warm hand, how fast my heart beat when he hold my hand, our promises. I also remember he's standing beside someone, mom & dad talking to them happily, we said our goodbyes and the boy suddenly shout 'I'll wait promise me to comeback' & I smiled happily & shouted back 'yeah I promise" still confused sai looked at her uncle

"the promise that I made with the boy is the only & last thing I remember...then when I woke up, I'm already in the unfamiliar surroundings"

her auntie nods & said "for now you should focus on getting better & getting your strength back. we will still run some test to see if you're already okay. as soon as you have negative results & you're fully recovered you might get discharged early so better be a good girl okay?" sai nodded

"we need to talk in my office"
her uncle looked at everyone & point in the direction of his office.

"boys don't you think you need to give your baby sister time to rest, so I recommend be a good boy & wait outside. sai take a rest for now cause later the nurse will come to run some test okay"

everyone follows Dexter to his office to discuss the details of sai condition it's a serious matter so all families are present, only some butler stays at sai room to make sure she's safe

"as you can see sai is in post-traumatic amnesia, this case show that less than 3% experienced no memory loss at all.
In 6% of cases, post-traumatic amnesia lasted for less than an hour. 7% experienced memory loss from an hour to a day. 16% between a day and a week. 23% between a week and a month. and 45% experienced amnesia for longer than a month." sai's uncle explained the cases to sai parents & siblings.

"Post-traumatic amnesia may be either short term, or longer lasting often over a month, but is hardly ever permanent. When continuous memory returns, the person can usually function normally.

Retrograde Amnesia sufferers may partially regain memory later, but memories are never regained with Anterograde Amnesia because they were not encoded properly.

Memories from just before the trauma are often completely lost just like how she can't remember the face of the boy & mom death. it is partly due to the psychological repression.

There is also some evidence that traumatic stress events can actually lead to a long-term physical reduction of the volume of the brain hippocampus, an organ integrally involved in the making and processing of memories."

"so kuya... you're telling me that my daughter is suffering from amnesia & that she can't remember the day that mom got in a accident?" sai father asked his older brother

his brother nodded "you see vincent the death of our mother is too painful for a child like her to handle, she even witness the accident of mom.

it's a traumatic experience for her, all of us in the family loves mom so it is only natural if sai brain wants to delete the accident."

"I'm not sure when will she regain her lost memory but if you're going to asked me I wish she will never remember mom death, I'm a father also vincent & I know how painful it is for her family & for your daughter, she's like a daughter to me." dexter said

"you were right kuya, if only I can take away all of her pain." vincent fold his hand into fist, sai mom softly hold her husband hand

"in my opinion we should be careful on saying some stuff to sai. for now in her record her heart rate is normal & it's not a life threatening,"

"it really is a miracle only 1% can survive the cardiac arrest like that. her heart already stopped functioning & she's been dead for 5 minutes then suddenly boom she went back like nothing happened.

her medical records are negative from any pain, the only positive is her amnesia. for now we will still run some test to make sure she's okay."

"everyone" vincent older brother looked at everyone faces "sai needs us. we should lend her our strength, sai strength will be us. her only family so until she doesn't remember mom death we need to support her." everyone agreed.

sai mom & dad said
"thank you so much auntie & uncle"
sai ate & kuya said

"you don't have to, it's what a family does, helping each other."

"vincent always remember what mom & dad taught us. Family members help each other in times of need. we are one, from body & blood from our parents." dexter said

"we need to go, gonna check our old man doing & I need to tell dad what's sai condition. he's been worried when he heard sai's in coma."

"kuya I heard from dad that sometimes you're the one who brings him on sai room. when me & my wife were busy from work & house. thank you" vincent said

"you don't have to I'm sai uncle & dad son, I'm your kuya remember" everyone laughed

"you have a wonderful family vincent, all of your children are mature & independent. they remind me of us when we were little. time flies so fast, now I'm feeling my age. I'm getting older when I saw all of our grandchildren. haha"
