To give you a better idea of what the Ottoman Empire was, I have included a couple of maps.
In 1298 Osman I founded the Osman dynasty. It reigned in an unbroken line for 623 years, until 1922.
This map shows the Ottoman Empire at its peak during the 16th century, marked by the reign of Süleyman I, and then at the very end in 1914. The battle of Vienna in 1683 is usually regarded as the beginning of the decline. In 1919 the Turkish war of independence started, in 1922 the Osman dynasty was abolished, and in October 1923 the new Republic of Turkey was declared.
A Wattpad reader shared with me that although the empire and the Caliphate fell, the dynasty still lives, and is represented by Sultan Dündar Osman IV.
