I gasp for breath, my hands clawing at the arm around my throat.

"Why are you following me?" A female voice hisses in my ear again. It's the girl I was following, I'm sure of it.

I step on the girl's foot and yank at her arm. I manage to slip free, seeing as her grip isn't that strong.

The girl has long black hair in a braid running down her back. She's small, but looks so fierce that I'm a little afraid of her.

"Do I need to ask you again?" The girl asks.

"Uh...no. Um, do you want your phone back?" I ask, stuttering.

"I told you I didn't," The girl crosses her arms.

"Why did you take those bracelets?" I blurt out.

The girl shrugs. "Are you gonna turn me in?"

"No, I just want to know."

"So I could sell them," The girl says like it's no big deal.

"It's illegal," I point out.

"Yeah, well, I don't have a lot of choices," The girl replies bitterly.

We stand in silence for a moment. I start to take out the phone to give it to her, but she stops me.

"Don't bother. I got another one."

I going to guess and say she stole it.

Alice and Kai come running around the corner.

"Why did you...oh. Hi," Alice says, spotting the girl.

The girl glares at me.

"I know you." Kai mumbles.

The girl nods slowly.

"Am I missing something?" Alice asks.

"She gave us her phone," I say.

Alice nods. She holds out her hand. "I'm Alice."

The girl hesitantly shakes Alice's hand. "Brenna."

Alice turns to me. "Why'd you run after her?"

Honestly, I don't know. I just felt like I needed to talk to her.

"I wanted to thank her for letting us have her phone," I say.

Out of the corner of my eye, I see Brenna roll her eyes.

"Where are you guys from? I've never seen you around here before," Brenna says.

"We're from...not here," I say. I may not have much experience with conversations with normal people, but I'm pretty sure you don't say you're an assassin.

"Obviously. I want to know where you are from," Brenna says.

"A boarding school," Alice says, giving me a look.

"Which one?" Brenna asks. Why does this girl ask so many questions?

"It's in Wisconsin. You probably won't know it," Alice says smoothly.

"What are you doing here?" Brenna asks.

"We are on break, visiting our grandparents who live in a nursing home here," Alice responds.

Brenna nods, satisfied.

"We-" Alice starts to say something else.

"There!" Someone shouts.

I turn and see the jewelry store clerk standing with two police officers. The clerk is pointing at Brenna.

Brenna sighs and looks at the men. "Can I help you?" She asks.
