Chapter 40: The morning after

Sultan's POV

I woke up early in the morning. It was dawn. I was expecting my ministers to arrive at the courtroom after some time. I have led a life of a soldier. And when you are in an army, it becomes easy to wake up at a predecided time.

I saw lovely Serena sleeping by my side, holding my hand in hers. Last night she held my hand before going to sleep. Probably she was scared that I would go away without saying goodbye to her.

I kissed her forehead and climbed out of her bed. I exited her chambers, went to my chambers to get ready for the court.

Serena's POV

A feeling of warmth engulfed me as soon as I woke up in the morning. The remembrance of the events of the previous night made me smile.

However, Sultan was nowhere to be found. I found a piece of parchment on the edge of my bed.

It was from Sultan.

"Dear Serena,

Whenever I see you, a feeling of warmth seeps into my heart. When I woke up in the morning, staring at your peaceful face was pure bliss. I wonder how blissful it will feel to witness that magnificent sight every day in the morning when I get up and lay my eyes on you.

I am sorry but I didn't have the heart wake you from your deep slumber.I am sure that you will accept me as your partner when I return. We have a lot to achieve. A lot to conquer. A lot to learn. And create a beautiful history together.

While I defend my motherland till the end of my breath, I want you to utilise this opportunity to do good for people. To save their precious lives and livestock. This is a once in a life time opportunity for you (if you choose to leave me).

When I return home, I wish to see how beautifully you have saved the day. In case I leave the world, I shall look from the heaven above and smile at the deeds you have done!

Before I leave, I have created a pact with Ali. In case I leave the world, you will be given an option to rule the kingdom. If you decline, Ali will be the next emperor. I love you. And I always will. I promise to you my dear, if we ever get married, I would never ever marry any other women or fall for any other women. You will be the sole mother of my children.

I know you will miss you. I hope you do!

I came out of the room only to see Ali hurriedly coming towards my room.

"Quiet an eventful night it was. Wasn't it?" Ali smirked as soon as he saw me.

I controlled the blush that was about to creep into my face.

"Let's focus on the matter in hand. It's an hour of emergency." I tried to appear in control.

Ali talked to himself as he led the way towards the court. Though he wasn't clear but I could faintly make out the words like brother, strict sister in law etc. I simply smiled. Poor him. I was certain he hadn't slept since last night.

The court was still in order. Ali took the charge.

"Your Majesty, Sultan took the army and advanced towards the battleground. Now the court wishes to know how can we tackle the problem of floods that have the potential to terrorize our villages?"

"I want all the ministers to offer me their suggestions. I will speak what is in my mind later. Appropriate suggestions will be accepted and appreciated." I tried to sound generous to get the maximum participation. I have ruled for a very few days but they all knew that if I set up my mind on something, I would never ever leave that thing. I won't tolerate any nonsensical interference. At the same time I demanded their honest opinions. I was patient but only when I felt that their suggestions and demands were with a good intention.

I heard all the opinions, ideas, their counter arguments very patiently. I was glad for their full cooperation. I had already mapped out the idea.

"It's time we execute the idea! Let's take the bull by it's horns now!" I roared.
