Before long, the girls began settling into their daily routines. Doris and Fanny soon learned how to smoothen their bedsheets, darn their stockings, and report to Matron just like the other girls. There was never a minute to spare – life at Malory Towers really was busy!

One thing that Doris and Fanny found difficult to adjust to were the lessons.

'Golly, I can't remember maths being so very hard!' whispered Fanny to Doris during prep.

'I know,' groaned Doris with her head in her hands. 'I simply can't wrap my head around all these numbers! And what is the point of learning this when we know we are to become nuns in the future anyways?'

Alicia happened to hear this last remark, and did not spare Doris with her sharp tongue.

'Why Doris, however will you manage, seeing as you have no brains at all?'

Doris turned red.

'I'm good at studies', she said in lofty tones. 'I happen to be very brilliant at French and English.'

But the girls knew this was empty talk indeed! Poor Doris and Fanny were as known for being bottom as they were for being pi. Alicia even christened them 'Pi Sisters', which became their permanent nickname from then on.

Doris and Fanny took almost an immediate disliking to Alicia from the beginning, and were always plotting some how to expose her to the girls. They were convinced that she was all an act, and were determined to somehow make all the girls loathe and despise her.

Alicia  liked baiting the Pi Sisters, and enjoyed spreading stories of their piousness to other girls in the common room. This, of course, made them dislike her even more.

'We will get back at that Alicia one of these days,' hissed Doris to Fanny during maths class.

Miss Potts sharp ears picked this up, and she frowned at the sisters.

'Enough whispering girls! It is no wonder you two are tying for bottom place this week,' Miss Potts berated angrily.

In fact, none of the teachers liked the Pi Sisters. The teachers despaired about their work, but they didn't seem to care. All they wanted was to be PI.
