I think this is kind-of Sex And the City-ish for millennials. Some of the fashion, all the romance, not so much of the sex. It has some entertaining moments, so highs a lows, but it felt kind of inevitable. Sure, it's a rom-com, it should be, to an extent, inevitable, but I never really felt concerned about the main thread.

You've got your straight up Cinderella story with a touch of self-made woman; girl from poor background becomes economics professor, starts dating nice guy, goes home to meet his family in Singapore... finds out he's super mega-rich. All the other girls want him. The family doesn't want her, chaos ensues. There's also a subplot here about a relationship breakdown - this felt to me a bit like something that must have been super important in the book, so they squeezed it into the film, but not knowing the book I don't feel it was a story they needed, or that the film did it justice.

There's lots of great locations, a showcase of culture and food and fashion. It was okay, but didn't really win me over.

J* gives it 3 stars.
