Ever since the day I got out of hospital, the family seemed to be coming together a bit more. Alexander and Connor were still slightly cold towards me but it didn't necessarily bother me.
My dad had been on his business trip for just over a week and was trying his best to get back to us. Sandy and Parker were going to spend more time in Canada.
I was going to the new school in a couple of days and since my dad wasn't home, I thought I could talk to Luke and try and wriggle myself out of some of his rules. Obviously, I wouldn't completely get out of them but I could at least try and make them less controlling.
I slipped off my bed and glanced at the digital clock, which was sat on my nightstand. My eyes widened slightly as the clock read 3:27pm. I hadn't even realised I had spent half the day in bed, just thinking.
I walked over to my bedroom and door and opened it. I wandered across the hallway and went down the stairs, before rounding the corner to my dad's office, where Luke had been stationed for the past week.
I knocked on the ajar door but didn't wait for a response, I just poked my head through the gap. Just like I thought, Luke was sitting at the desk, staring at his phone screen with his eyebrows furrowed.
"Hey, Em, what's up?" He asked, without looking up from his phone. I stepped inside the office and shut the door after me, before I walked over to his desk.
I placed the palms of my hands on the smooth, wooden surface and studied my brother's face and how concentrated he seemed to be. Oh well, I thought, this won't take very long.
"I just wanted to talk about school." I stated and snuck a glance at his screen but looked away again in a split second. After a couple of moments of silence, I spoke up again. "Is that okay?" I asked.
He gazed up from whatever he was focused on and nodded his head at the armchair I was standing next to. Then, he turned his phone off and placed it face down on the surface, which was a bit suspicious but I wasn't going to question it. Instead, like Luke had gestured, I took a seat in the armchair opposite him.
"So, what's up? Are you nervous?" He questioned, folding his arms over his chest as he leaned back in his - or rather my dad's - armchair. He stared at me and I shifted slightly, starting to wonder whether it was a good idea to have come down here to pester him.
"Well, yes..." I trailed off, staring right back at him. I swallowed the lump in the back of my throat and cleared it with a cough. I slouched in the chair and draped my arms on the arms of the armchair. "But-"
"What are you nervous about? Is it Wyatt? Because you know you'll be fine; you have Connor, Alexander, Hayden and soon...Liam." He cut me off and I sat there for a second, blankly staring at him, before I blinked myself out of my thoughts.
"Um, no. Actually, I was going to ask if we could change some of the rules?" I asked, hesitantly and sheepishly. He groaned and dragged his hands down his face but before he could say anything, I added onto my previous suggestion. "Not completely! Just a little bit, of course."
"Emily, those rules are there for your own safety, okay? It's not supposed to be a punishment." He told me and I nodded my head, slowly, showing him I slightly understood what he meant.
"So having no boyfriend is for my own safety?" I queried, drumming my fingertips on the arms of the armchair. Luke stared at me, blankly, seeming unimpressed with my input. "I'm not...I just- c'mon, Luke, it just seems a little bit extra, doesn't it?" I questioned.
"I think it's necessary. That way, you won't get hurt and I won't have to break any bones." He stretched his arms behind his head, watching as my mouth opened and closed but I couldn't think of a defense.
